MY RESEARCH
I strive to understand the ecologic, immunologic, and pathogenic mechanisms of infectious diseases with local to global implications. The group is experienced in leveraging genomics, diagnostics, vaccinology, molecular biosciences, and microbiology to solve public health challenges. These include outbreak identification and characterization, vaccine development, and disease bio-surveillance.With projects and collaborators all over the world, the group takes a one-health approach to battling infectious disease. That only by understanding the interactions between humans, animals, and the environment can we solve complex health issues. My group uses a combination of wet lab and field studies to carry out research from the ʻlandscape to the labʻ.
C-MĀIKI SYNERGY
My group, through the research, seeks to increase ecological resilience across scales. My experience in global and local health, from organismal to microbial science, has the capacity for many synergistic activities within C-MAIKI.
IMPACT TO HAWAII
The work I do has direct public health implications. Identifying the microbes that can make animals and people sick in Hawaii is an important first step in improving health. We derive solutions from our work in the form of policy recommendations, stakeholder education, and biotechnology driven innovation.
